Whether it's for a new job, a part in a TV show, or a spot in an ad, the process begins with someone seeing your headshot. Headshots should have a natural feel. They need to show the real you and not be overly retouched. Here are a few things to help you get ready.
Clothing - While most of your body will not be showing, clothing is still very important. Solid colors and classic styles work best for headshots. The point of the image is to showcase you, not your outfit. Avoiding patterns and bold colors helps your face and expression steal the show.
Skin - Hydrate, hydrate, and then hydrate some more. Giving your skin what it needs from the inside will keep it clear, toned and smooth. Avoid foods with heavy salts for a few days before your shoot to avoid bloating. And of course get plenty of sleep.
Hair - Choose a style and cut a week or two in advance. Freshly cut hair can appear awkward on camera. Understanding that you should look like your headshot photograph, choose a hairstyle that you can easily recreate for your auditions. A neutral style that highlights the natural curve and shape of your face is always the best choice for an acting headshot.
Teeth - Do your best to try to have a nice, bright smile. Avoid foods that may stain your teeth and use a whitening toothpaste for the weeks leading up to your session. But don't worry if you still have some yellowing. This is the one area I don't mind doing a little extra retouching on.
Expressions - Seasoned Actors, Comedians, and Models know that you should have a few different messages to convey in mind for your shoot. Think of your goals for the headshots and practice the smile, stare, glare or laugh that will get you the part you're after.
Communicate and Relax - If you're unsure about anything above, or have other questions about how to prepare, reach out to me. This is probably something you don't do often, but it's what I do every day and I'm here to help. Being ready will help you relax and have fun on the day of your shoot. That leads to more creativity and better results.
